What is Eczema?

Eczema, also called Dermatitis or skin inflammation, is defined by the National Eczema Association as “an inflammatory skin condition that causes itchiness, dry skin, rashes, scaly patches, blisters and skin infections.” There are many types of Eczema and as many as 31 million Americans have to live with it in one form or another. However, the most common symptom for all of these people is itchy skin.

The National Eczema Association explains that Atopic Dermatitis (eczema) is the most common and is caused by an over re-active immune system that causes the skin to get itchy and dry when exposed to certain environmental triggers.

Environmental Triggers

Keep in mind that you may be predisposed to Eczema if your family members have it and some household accessories are no help. The National Eczema Association lists many very common items as potential irritants, including:

isothiazolinone, an antibacterial commonly found in commercial personal care products like baby wipes

cocamidopropyl betaine, which is used to thicken commercial shampoos and lotions

synthetic fragrances in commercial candles and personal care products

surface cleansers and disinfectants

fabrics like wool and polyester

laundry detergents and products with chemical additives

certain commercial soaps, shampoos, bubble bath products, body wash, and facial cleansers

Treating Symptoms of Eczema

The National Eczema Association explains that, “Proper, consistent skin care is essential in the prevention and management of eczema.”

The most recommended treatments for eczema include moisturizers, antihistamines, and steroid creams. However, the best treatments are personalized to you by age, severity, and preference.

When treating eczema it’s important to:

1. Know Your Triggers

2. implement a regular bathing and moisturizing routine

3. consult your professional care provider for advise on products and over the counter prescriptions if necessary

Olive Oil Products in Your Skincare Routine

Now, can olive oil products be implemented into you skincare routine and improve the symptoms of your Eczema? Yes, but there are some important factors to keep in mind.

The National Eczema Association explains that natural oils have been used in skincare for hundreds of years, many of which have beneficial fatty acids that help to repair the skin barrier that is laking in people with eczema, however not all natural oils are effective. Natural oils that are chemically processed and heat extracted tend to be more irritating and may even worsen eczema. Most commercially available olive oil and olive oil products do fall into this category. However, cold-processed (Virgin) oils are extracted from the fruit with out the use of chemicals or heat and tend to be much safer for the skin.

Here’s were we come in! Our Olive Oil is classified as Extra Virgin, so not only is the olive oil produced through cold-process extraction without the use of heat or chemicals, it is also specially cared for to have low acidity, meaning about 1%

In 2021, The National Library of Medicine published an essay titled, Anti-inflammatory and Restorative Effects of Olives in Topical Use, in which they described the results from multiple peer reviewed articles that studied the healing effects of olive oil on the skin.

They found that, “olive oil appears to be an effective, safe, and available treatment.” As well as, “ that olive oil is an alternative remedy to minimize the frequent use of chemical-based treatments.” For people who suffer from various wounds and skin damage including diabetic foot ulcers, atopic dermatitis (eczema),and diaper dermatitis (eczema) in babies.

One study investigated the antibacterial and emollient effects of both virgin Coconut Oil and Virgin Olive Oil, finding that both oils have beneficial properties that decrease chances of infection. They state that the Squalene found in olive oil has antioxidant and moisturizing properties that can treat dermatitis (eczema), acne, and psoriasis. Several studies also show that olive oil can decrease wound pain due to naturally occurring chemicals with in the oil as well as show that olive oil does not have any side effects for consumers.

This medical journal concluded that, “According to the results of many studies, it seems that olive is a natural and safe substance that contains antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties, and its use in wound healing or speeding up its process is recommended.”

( With all this scientific data it seems I can not understate the benefits of olive oil in you skincare routine – take a look at this study to see how topical use of olive oil significantly decreased severe dermatitis during chemo radiotherapy. )
